Practical Workshop: Qualitative analysis of social media data

Oct 13, 2020

The evaluation of data from social media channels is not only considered a core competence in science. This ability is also becoming increasingly important in other industries, such as human resources and marketing. But how can social media data be evaluated? In the three-hour workshop organized by the Project for Successful Teaching and Learning (PerLe), students practice evaluating and analyzing qualitative data using Twitter with the help of the MAXQDA analysis software. The skills taught in the workshop Analysis skills can also be used to evaluate other qualitative data (e.g. expert interviews). The workshop can be attended by students of any subject area be visited. Previous knowledge is not absolutely necessary.

  • Maximum number of participants: maximum 16 students
  • Time and place: November 12th., 15:00 to 18:00, The event will be held via ZOOM. (Login link and password will be sent to you by mail after registration).

Research report online! “Die Zukunft und die natürlichen Grenzen des Konsums”

Oct 07, 2020

The Department of Marketing recently published their first research report that was developed together with participating marketing students as part of the research seminar of Nils C. Hoffmann and Amelie Griesoph during the winter semester 19/20.

The report deals with topics on how our economy needs to be reorganized in the future to get in harmony with our environment and focusses especially on the limitations that we as consumers will need to be aware of: The environment already reached its limits – so does our consumption?

With qualitative analyses, the report investigates the attitude of consumers towards topics like the consumption of meat, the intransparency of inflationary CO2-Labels on our products, the phenomenom of flight shaming and the question of teaching sustainability as a subject in school. It includes the results of the student’s seminar papers and also sheds light on our department’s research projects.

We are happy to share our findings with you online, available at: https://macau.uni-kiel.de/receive/macau_mods_00000639

New article accepted in Journal of Marketing Management

Jun 17, 2020

The article "Extrinsic Product Attributes in Consumers’ Food Decisions: Review and Network Analysis of the Marketing Literature" by Nils Christian HoffmannClaudia SymmankRobert Mai, Marijn Stok, Harald Rohm, and Prof. Stefan Hoffmann, has been accepted and published in the Journal of Marketing Management!

Here's the abstract of the article:
The paper synthesises the existing research on the influence of key product characteristics on the consumers’ food decision-making. By applying network analysis on a sample of 233 empirical studies from the last three decades, the paper demonstrates how marketing-specific variables are embedded in a network of other predictors. The paper also analyses network structure and density using well established measures. The results show that there is still a lack of research concerning the interplay between marketing-relevant extrinsic product attributes (e.g. price, brand, labelling, country of origin) and intrinsic food attributes, policy-related factors, as well as aspects of the proximal and distal environment. The paper identifies gaps in the marketing literature and derives research propositions. Additionally, implications for marketing practice are developed.

Welfare beyond consumption - New paper accepted:

May 22, 2020

The paper “Welfare Beyond Consumption: The Benefits of Having Less.” by Alexandra Hüttel, Ingo Balderjahn (both University of Potsdam) and Stefan Hoffmann has been accepted by the Journal “Ecological Economics” and will be published soon. Based on representative data from the US (N = 1,075) and Germany (N = 1,070), the study shows that two anti-consumption types (collaborative consumption and voluntary simplicity) do not reduce the well-being of individuals, but in some cases, even improve it.

Successful completion of an exciting practical seminar

Jan 29, 2020

Students of business administration presented their marketing campaigns for the Ride-Pooling Service "CleverShuttle", developed over the semester, within a seminar of the department of marketing. This closing event took place in the “ZfE Inkubator” at Kiel University. The four groups, who were supposed to convince the jury of their ideas in order to win the pitch, had different goals to accomplish. One group was allowed to devote itself to the B2B marketing of CleverShuttle, another had the pleasure to implement a target group-specific marketing-approach to tourists, the third group was free to let off steam in the entire marketing mix and last but not least, a guerrilla measure called "reverse graffiti" crowned the event. The "Clever Spots" met with the greatest approval from the jury, consisting of Frank Meisel, Anke Rasmus, Stefan Hoffmann who represented the scientific part of the jury as well as Boje Sjut (Clever Shuttle) and Svenja Nefen (Kieler Nachrichten) from practice. In the end, the winning group was rewarded by the CleverShuttle managing director Boje Sjut from Kiel. However, all groups succeeded in adapting their marketing measures to the green and cost-effective company CleverShuttle and, on the basis of empirical research, which also took place during the seminar, created unique campaigns that all deserved the victory.

The department of marketing is pleased about the successful completion of an exciting and productive seminar. We are looking forward to further events of this kind. Finally, we would like to thank CleverShuttle for the productive cooperation, our jury for their participation and the Center for Entrepreneurship, which provided us with the Inkubator as a venue.

You can find the press release about the seminar here.

New article accepted in the Management International Review

Jan 16, 2020

The article "Chain of Blame: A Multi-Country Study of Consumer Reactions Towards Supplier Hypocrisy in Global Supply Chains" by Nils Christian Hoffmann, Prof. Juelin Yin and Prof. Stefan Hoffmann has been accepted at the Management International Review!

Here's the abstract of the article:
Recent research identified firms’ hypocritical behavior as a major threat to their reputation among consumers. This paper expands the dyadic relationship to a triadic relationship, integrating the hypocritical behavior of suppliers in global supply chains. Introducing a chain of blame, this paper suggests that the hypocritical behavior of the supplier backfires on the firm, leading to loss of reputation and increased boycotting tendencies. We test our proposed framework across one main study and two follow-up studies with consumers from two industrialized and two BRICS countries (Germany, US, South-Africa and China) and a total of 1.177 respondents. Results show that consumers from various countries consistently hold firms responsible for their suppliers’ hypocritical behavior, consequently lower their reputation ratings, and intend to engage in boycotting the firm. The analysis further identifies the origin of the supplier and consumer ethnocentrism as nationally-variant promoting factors of consumers’ boycott intention and shows that the influence of those factors is contingent on consumers’ expectations towards foreign vs domestic firms. Implications for managers and marketing-managers are given.
